Celebrating 125 Years

Tuesday October 25th 2011

The Birthday Party

What a great party it was - with lots of guests, great fellowship, good music, good food and - most importantly of all - a tremendous sense of giving thanks to God for all that this band has done in the last 125 years.

Of course words cannot do justice to all of the emotions that were felt during this wonderful weekend. Starting with our rehearsal with Colonel Robert Redhead and his wife Gwenyth last Thursday evening which ended with the band singing The Calvary Track we were sure that we were in for a very special weekend band 125
The band dinner on friday was attended by nearly 100 and they all had a great time. Saturday found the band marching through Bournemouth Gardens to the Pavilion where they were met by the Mayor of Bournemouth.
massed 125 Then it was back to the Albert Orsborn Memorial Hall for a rehearsal of the specially augmented band. After a typically sumptuous spread provided for the band and their guests at tea time the celebration concert got under way.
Former bandsmen and women joined with the current band to play in the second half of the concert conducted by all the surviving former bandmasters - Kenneth Downie, Roland Wright and Garry Lawrence - with the concert fittingly coming to a close with the massed band playing Leslie Condon's Call of the Righteous.
On Sunday the band took centre stage once more in the meetings led by our guests. The morning meeting was based around Col. Redhead's A Pastoral Symphony whilst the evening took the same theme as our programme's on tour "A Hymn to Christ" and culminated in a performance of Col. Redhead's Christ Hymn. cake 125
Following the afternoon meeting the birthday cake - created for the occasion by Julie Lawrence - was distributed to those who were in attendance.

The weekend was a very special one for all of the band - we pay tribute to those who got us through the first 125 years and hope that we will be worthy of the task of starting the next 125.
